Am I the only one who finds The XX extremely boring? Apparently. Congrats on those rave reviews, guys… the sound of bloggers typing away has more energy than your music.

Katie Crutchfield’s latest album, Cerulean Salt, is a sort of “I don’t care” attitude with polished edges. If dead-pan extended into the musical realm, these tracks would be it’s soul-sister.

So, I’ve been hearing a good deal about these dudes lately, but have failed to check them out until today. Mega rad, maaaaaan.
Since I’ve yet to have my second cup of coffee, my writing skills are a bit dim… so, instead, I will just copy and paste what Spotify wrote about them. I mean… why add to something that’s already good enough? “Armed with swaggering attitude and crunchy riffs, Big Eyes deliver a modern take on punk rock and power pop. As singer/guitarist Kate Eldridge’s bands Cheeky and Used Kids split up, she formed Big Eyes in Brooklyn in 2009 along with bassist and Kicking Spit/Seasick alum Mark Bronzino and drummer C.J. Frederick. They debuted with a demo 7″ and cassette the following summer, followed that December by the Why Can’t I 7″ for the Don Giovanni label. The trio embarked on its first U.S. tour as 2011 began, offering a self-titled EP that spring. Big Eyes’ full-length debut, Hard Life, arrived that summer for Don Giovanni, as the band relocated to Seattle, parting ways with Bronzino and bringing in Keith Spencer to handle bass duties on the road.” – Chrysta Cherrie, Rovi

Being on the cutting edge of music with Demo Schmemo, I’m sometimes privilege to new releases before they come out. The Hat Madder are a psychedelic rock band from Michigan, although originally formed in Austin, Texas in 2004. Their 3rd album “Orgy Opposite” is coming out next month on GTG Records, and it’s a full 45 minutes of densely layered guitar heavy rock.
Lead singer Isaac possesses a distinctive voice that wouldn’t have been out of place on a 90s alternative rock mixtape (like, a real tape) but the songs themselves recall everything from Cheap Trick to TV on the Radio. While brevity isn’t the band’s strong suit (only 4 of the 11 songs are under 4 minutes long) there’s enough going on to keep things interesting with hooks never too far underneath the noise. Personal highlight: track number 9, “Cides,” with its driving beat and hauntingly sweet vocals making it a deliciously hypnotic ride.

Though it’s not on Orgy Opposite… and is about 5 years old… check out for Baby Grand, one of my favorite tracks of theirs.
